In a joint intelligence-led operation, the Ghana Navy, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) and National Security, intercepted two large wooden boats carrying between 4.7 and 4.8 tonnes of suspected cannabis at the Volta Lake estuary in Ada. [1, 2]

The Details of the Interception

  • The Seizure: Authorities discovered 117 sacks of suspected marijuana (Indian hemp). Each sack contained approximately 80 individual packs, totaling thousands of compressed moulds. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Street Value: The confiscated shipment holds an estimated street value of over US$1 million. [1, 2]
  • Destination: According to Naval Captain Osei-Brobbey, the contraband was loaded at Ada and was destined for Nigeria, specifically intended for distribution to users in Port Harcourt. [1, 2, 3]

The operation forms part of ongoing, collaborative west-African maritime security efforts targeting cross-border drug trafficking networks operating along the Gulf of Guinea.
